BALLARAT ARC MINI COMP
The Ballarat Adult Riding Club Mini Comp came about in the late 1990's when a couple of our members saw the need for riders to have the opportunity to learn about riding a dressage test, without the stress etc of an official competition.
Thus, the Mini Comp was born!
The Mini Comp is held each year on 4 rally days, in conjunction with the usual rally format. The Organiser (the winner of the previous year's competition) chooses which months to hold the competition, but generally the dates are spread-out throughout the financial year, often beginning in March, and finishing by September or October.
A notice/advert is put on the facebook page advertising the next competition, the month before entries are due. This will state which test is being ridden, the date the entry form is due in by etc. The chosen dates are usually advertised in the Annual Calendar as well.
A draw will then be posted on the facebook page.
All riders competing in the Mini Comp ride at their assessed level (or one level above) and compete against each other. This differs to a proper competition where you compete against combinations in the same level. The scoring is worked out by a percentage basis, so effectively no-one is disadvantaged. The competition has had overall (annual) winners from different levels over the years.
Combinations that have not as yet been assessed for Dressage may still enter the Mini Comp. Members would be advised to look at the various tests in the different levels, as well as the preambles, to determine which level they believe they should try their first test at. If any un-assessed combination were to win a Mini Comp day, it would be assumed that they would ride at the higher level next time. If in doubt, ask another more experienced member!
Riders are expected to present to the judge and ride a test as per normal Dressage rules. They should be neatly attired, preferably in at least a red top, with correctly approved gear on horse and rider. Unlike a real competition, there is no gear check, so it is up to riders to know what is, or is not allowed for Dressage and their level. We also do not use bridle/back numbers which would be required in a real competition situation.
The Mini Comp is an opportunity for our members to ride a Dressage Test in the comfort and more relaxed atmosphere of our home grounds. It is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has never ridden a test before; someone who hasn't ridden a test for a very long time; a horse or rider who suffers with nerves and needs more practise; a rider who wishes to extend themselves and ride a test in the level higher than which they are assessed; a member on a new horse; riders wishing to receive evaluation of how they are proceeding with their horse. The list really could go on, you get the idea!
There is a presentation at the end of the year for the top 6 placings. The organiser may choose to present either rosettes or sashes. The overall winner is then presented with the coveted perpetual trophy, a Witch! The history behind this choice goes back to the whole concept of the Mini Comp being a friendly competition open to members who wish to learn and practise the art of Dressage.
